Deanna’s Story
Deanna was born in Toronto on January 27, 1943 to Harold and Adonia. Her younger brother, Paul, was born in 1945. Many happy summers were spent at their Aunt Hazel’s farm in Cornwall — days filled with sunshine, animals, and laughter.
As a girl, Deanna loved swimming laps at Sunnyside Pool and spending long afternoons by the lake. In her teens and twenties, she discovered a love of ballroom dancing, often spending evenings twirling across the floor of the Palais Royale along the Lakeshore.
It was around this time that she met the handsome firefighter who lived next door to her Aunt Leah. Deanna and Bill were married on June 3, 1967, beginning a partnership that would endure for more than five decades.
Life soon brought both blessings and challenges. In 1970, they adopted their sweet five-year-old son, Shawn. Around that time, a friend shared the Bible’s comforting promises with Deanna. She began studying the Bible in depth, and soon Bill and little Shawn joined her. Together, Deanna and Bill were baptized as Jehovah’s Witnesses in May 1971. That same year, Deanna was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Despite the pain and limitations it caused, her faith and love for the ministry only grew stronger. She helped many to come to know Jehovah and find comfort in His promises. Two of her neighbors were especially dear to her — one of whom also suffered from rheumatoid arthritis — and both became lifelong friends and spiritual sisters.
In 1977, their family was complete with the arrival of their daughter, Anne. The family made many cherished memories in their cozy townhouse, a place where the door was always open. When her health later made stairs impossible, they moved to 90 York Gate, where their home continued to be filled with warmth, laughter, and spiritual activity. Meetings and conventions were always a priority, and Deanna spent her days preparing for them with great care.
Throughout the decades of her illness, Deanna was lovingly cared for by her devoted husband, Bill, whose steadfast love and tireless dedication were a constant source of strength and comfort to her. Their bond was an enduring example of loyalty and faith in action. Supported by her daughter, Anne, and strengthened by their shared trust in Jehovah, the family faced each challenge with courage and unity.
Deanna gained another daughter in 1987 when Shawn married Natalie, and another son in 2004 when Gerrit married Anne. Her heart expanded again when she became a grandmother to Lenora and Colton — her pride and joy.
Deanna was known for her listening ear, her thoughtful cards and letters, and her deep compassion for others. Her unwavering faith sustained her through every trial — through pain, disappointment, and the gradual loss of mobility and independence. She held firm to her confidence in Jehovah’s promise of perfect health and everlasting life in a Paradise on earth. Though her absence leaves a great void, there is comfort in knowing she now rests safely in Jehovah’s memory.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to all who surrounded Deanna with love and support throughout her life and final days. Her brother Paul was often by her side during her hospital stay, bringing comfort and companionship. Deep gratitude is also extended to her longtime nurse, Sophia, and to the compassionate palliative care staff at Baycrest Hospital for their exceptional kindness and care. The family also wishes to thank extended family and friends for their thoughtful messages and support, whose kindness has brought comfort during this difficult time.
Psalm 73:26
“My body and my heart may fail, but God is the rock of my heart and my portion forever.”
This verse reflected the way Deanna lived her life — trusting fully in Jehovah’s strength when her own failed.
Revelation 21:3, 4
“With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: ‘Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.’”
